What is a Proof of Concept?

Proving a concept is not the same as testing the technical viability of a solution. It is about knowing, before anything, if someone needs this solution or not.

PoC is the abbreviation for Proof of Concept. In an innovation laboratory, PoC is aligned to the design of the solution that is being developed. In order to make a Proof of Concept, besides creativity to simulate real use situations at a low cost, it is also necessary to master several methodologies.

A well designed Proof of Concept allows you to identify several different potential problems – from cultural and behavioral issues to cognitive aspects, and also practical details regarding implementation. All this before even investing time and money onto complex solutions.

During the PoC we can find out how efficiently a new product or service meets the specific needs of the customer. Thus, we can obtain answers from objective feedback to the most important question: if people really want what we will offer, and how much they are willing to pay for it.

A well designed Proof of Concept allows you to identify several different potential problems. All this before even investing time and money onto complex solutions.

With the data obtained by means of the Proof of Concept, it is possible to offer the necessary support to the product manager and, at the same time, provide support to the whole development and marketing teams, while maximizing the invested resources in each step of the project, strengthening the plan and keeping focused on the customer’s expectations.

Making innovation viable in companies of all sizes and segments

Companies that incorporate proofs of concept into their research and development practice can innovate faster and faster. If the traditional models of research and development are viable only for big companies, proofs of concept allow quick experimentation cycles and at a fraction of the cost. This means that even smaller companies which are not directly connected to innovation markets can benefit from this technique, through testing dozens or hundreds of initiatives in short periods of time. With the data obtained during the Proof of Concept, managers can have the necessary information to make decisions, whether it is for a new launch or when trying to improve current products or services.

Be prepared to change the route while making the Proof of Concept

No matter how much you wish to put your original idea into the market, going through a Proof of Concept is also an exercise of adaptation and detachment. Some trials can be necessary before you get to a product that will actually be loved by customers. The great difference is that a PoC allows us to go through all these phases quickly and at a low cost, while some traditional processes may make us drown with our favorite ideas.
